Personal Right-Skilling Explained

In my previous blog, I explained the difference between corporate upskilling, reskilling and right-skilling. Those concepts are primarily viewed from the perspective of the organisation and its current or future ‘workforce’.

Personal right-skilling turns that perspective around.

✔️ Personal right-skilling is the continuous process of acquiring the right soft and hard skills, knowledge and practical experience for your future—not just for your current or future employer.

The starting point is different.

Instead of asking:

“What skills does my employer need?”

you ask:

“What skills do I need for the life and work I want?”

Personal right-skilling is about making conscious choices that help you achieve your own goals, whether you want to:

  • – stay with your current employer;
  • – move to another organisation (private sector of public sector);
  • – leave the corporate rat race;
  • – start a business;
  • – become a freelancer or consultant;
  • – work part-time;
  • – build multiple income streams;
  • or simply find more meaning, freedom and balance in your work and life and above all in your personal life-work balance.

In other words, personal right-skilling starts with you, not with your manager or HR-professionsl in your curren organisation.

Only then do you decide which softt- and hard skills including AI tools, technologies and practical experience will help you move in that direction. And which forms of education you have to choose.

For me, personal right-skilling has been a way of life for decades. Long before AI became mainstream, I was continuously learning new skills while building my own online activities alongside my corporate career. Those skills later helped me make a successful transition to independent work.

Personal right-skilling is not about learning everything.

It is about learning the right things for your future. To secure the future of your income and work. Not of the organization you are currently working in.
