Corporate Upskilling, Reskilling and Right-Skilling Explained
If you follow discussions about the future of work, learning and development (L&D), HR or talent management, you have probably come across the terms upskilling, reskilling and right-skilling.
Today, these concepts are widely used by consulting firms such as McKinsey and by HR and L&D professionals around the world. They are also discussed extensively on LinkedIn. Although they are closely related, they have different purposes.
✔️ Corporate upskilling is the just-in-time acquisition of new soft and hard skills that help employees perform better in their current role or function. Upskilling enables organisations to improve productivity, innovation and business performance while helping employees keep pace with new technologies, regulations and new ways of working.
✔️ Corporate reskilling is the timely acquisition of new soft and hard skills that prepare employees for a different role or function within the organisation. Reskilling becomes necessary when jobs change, new roles emerge or existing skills become less relevant. It helps organisations redeploy talent instead of replacing it.
✔️ Corporate right-skilling is the strategic process of ensuring that the organisation has the right people with the right skills in the right roles at the right time. It combines upskilling, reskilling and workforce planning to meet current and future business needs. The objective is to build and maintain a workforce that supports the organisation’s long-term strategy and competitiveness.
In other words, corporate upskilling, reskilling and right-skilling are primarily viewed from the perspective of the organisation and its current or future workforce.
In my next blog, I turn this perspective around and explain Personal Right-Skilling—learning the right skills for your future, not just for your current or future employer
