Corporate AI-Upskilling, AI-Reskilling and AI-Right-Skilling Explained
If you follow discussions about artificial intelligence, the future of work, learning and development (L&D), HR or talent management including on LinkedIn, you have probably come across the terms AI-upskilling, AI-reskilling and AI-right-skilling.
Today, these concepts are widely used by consulting firms, HR and L&D professionals and organisations around the world. They are also discussed extensively on LinkedIn. Although they are closely related, they have different purposes. They are different forms of ‘corporate skilling’ and Learning & Development.
✔️ Corporate AI-upskilling is the just-in-time acquisition of new AI-related soft and hard skills that help employees perform better in their current role or function. AI-upskilling enables organisations to improve productivity, innovation and business performance while helping employees use relevant AI models, tools and applications effectively.
✔️ Corporate AI-reskilling is the timely acquisition of new AI-related soft and hard skills that prepare employees for a different role or function within the organisation. AI-reskilling becomes necessary when AI changes existing jobs, new AI-related roles emerge or current skills become less relevant. It helps organisations redeploy employees instead of replacing them.
✔️ Corporate AI-right-skilling is the strategic process of ensuring that the organisation has the right people with the right AI skills in the right roles at the right time. It combines AI-upskilling, AI-reskilling and workforce planning to meet current and future business needs. The objective is to build and maintain a workforce that supports the organisation’s AI strategy and long-term competitiveness.
In other words, corporate AI-upskilling, AI-reskilling and AI-right-skilling are primarily viewed from the perspective of the leadership and hr-professionals in corporate organisations and other large organizations in the private and the public sector and its current or future ‘workforce’. Its ‘human resources’.
In my next blog, I turn this perspective around and explain Personal AI Right-Skilling—learning the right AI skills for your future, not just for your current or future employer.
